LPN Study Guides

Why are LPN study guides so popular?  For anyone who’s about to graduate from licensed practical nursing school, it’s crunch time.  The moment they’ve been working hard to reach for over a year is about to arrive,  time for their appointment with destiny, also known as the National Council on Licensing Exam (NCLEX-PN).  All their hard work can be for naught, and all their hopes can be dashed if they don’t pass the NCLEX_PN.  That’s why so many students invest in LPN study guides.  And the smarter students buy one well before test time approaches.  Many of them purchase one when they enroll in school.

The Miracle of Green Tea

Claimed to have been used for at least 4,000 years now as an alternative for medicine in China, there seems to be no other food or drink has as much benefits in terms of health as green tea. Since the ancient times, the Chinese have been benefiting from the medicinal benefits of this miraculous drink that range from treating simple headaches to a more complicated condition such as depression. In our world today, many scientific studies from across continents have already provided sufficient pieces of evidence on the seemingly endless health benefits of green tea. Following are just a few of the illnesses which green tea is claimed to help cure: cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular impairments, infections, and impaired immune infection.

You may be wondering what is in this drink that makes it very special? Well, the answer is because green tea is rich in EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate. This is one anti-oxidant that is known to be powerful as it not only inhibits spread and growth of cancer cells but it actually kills these fatal cells without touching and harming the healthy tissue.  Aside from that, EGCG was also proven to be effective in bringing down LDL cholesterol levels, and thwarting any formation of blood clots which is not normal and usually leads to stroke and heart attack.

You may also wonder what sets green tea apart from all other Chinese teas, and what are its advantages? The answer is in how green tea is processed. Unlike black and oolong tea leaves that are fermented, green tea leaves are steamed. Steaming stops the EGCG compound from oxidation whereas fermentation leads to EGCG being converted to different compounds which are less effective in prevention and fighting against the various diseases like those mentioned earlier.

Apart from its medicinal help, it was discovered that green tea is also effective in weight control. A study done in November 1999 found out that the participants who was given both caffeine and green tea was able to burn more calories versus those that were given only caffeine. Another use of green tea which was later on discovered was its help in the prevention of tooth decay. It was found out that apart from it being able to destroy bacteria to avoid cases of food poisoning, it also has the capacity to destroy those bacteria which leads to dental plaque. Currently, several more studies are being done on the other possible benefits of green tea.

After hearing about all the positive things about the drink, I’m pretty sure you are interested to know whether it has negative side effects to those who take it in. As of this writing, no other negative side effects were recorded apart from possibility of acquiring insomnia because of its caffeine ingredient. But the good news is, green tea still contains less caffeine than coffee.

So how much do you need to consume, to feel its benefits? It actually depends. A good 5 cups would be ideal. To learn more about green tea and its health benefits, visit http://meditate.com.au

Is There Such Thing as Green Tea Overdose?

In all corners of the world, the problem of weight loss is a universal concern. Millions of people are suffering from obesity and are having a hard time losing those unhealthy fats. Many research and studies yielded more than a variety of products and ways to address this problem—supplements, vitamins, exercises, and green tea.

Green tea has become immensely popular for its medical and health benefits especially in the weight loss department. And with its popularity comes another concern, instinctively, those who are dying to get slim and lose those fats and finally get that body they have been dreaming of for several years now, will think that the more they drink green tea in a day, the faster they will get slimmer, thus, over dosage.

Fortunately, studies have proven that the benefits a person gets from drinking the tea is not affected by the amount he takes in. Records show no significant side effects if a person drinks green tea heavily. For the record, it is absolutely safe to drink green tea. Many even drink up to 20 cups in just one day. Green tea also has a decaffeinated version, which also provides same benefits the original does. The effect actually is determined by how one prepares the drink. The size of the green tea leaves matters. The smaller and the looser, the better, as that allows quick infusion. Teabags are actually more common to dieters. To maximize the benefits of your drink, dunk the teabag on a continuous manner to extract more polyphenols—this contains antioxidants and other health benefits. Do not leave the teabag floating and always use boiling water when preparing your drink as it increases the polyphenols as well. The amount of time the teabag steeped matter as well, should be high to extract higher content of polyphenols.

Caution though for first timers, during the first few times of consumption, one may experience insomnia or restlessness. The good news is, the body just needs to adjust, and once it has already adjusted, all things will be back to normal. And you will finally get that body!

Women and Green Tea

The miraculous product named green tea is a by product of a plant named Camellia sinensis, like all other types of tea, But what sets it apart from all tea, black tea in particular, is the way it is processed. Black tea undergoes fermentation whereas green tea does not. This creates the huge difference as fermentation has an effect on the tea’s antioxidants. The less fermented the tea is, the more natural the antioxidants, which the tea contains, remain. Ergo, the healthier and the more protective the product becomes.

These antioxidants, as we all know very well, are vital in working against free radical in the human body. These free radicals are produced when our body converts the food we take in into energy. These could potentially have a harmful effect in our cells and DNA. And this could only mean, these free radicals would make our bodies weaker and more prone to several diseases such as cancer, heart diseases and even stroke.

An enormous amount of research studies have connected green tea with different types of cancer, which includes the nightmare of many women—cancer of the ovaries. This type of cancer is said to be the eighth most common in women, and the fifth in terms of mortality rate involving cancer. UK Tea Council reported a study, which was conducted for 15 years and involves 60,000 Swedish women, aged 40 to 76. The researchers examined the dietary habits of these women and it included the amount of green tea they consume. Some of the major and relevant findings of the said study state that the regular drinkers of green tea were much less prone to getting the cancer. It also added that amount of tea consumed also influence the risk. Naturally, the higher the consumption, the lower the risk of getting the cancer.

On a lighter note, the American Cancer Society reported that statistics are improving—incidence of women getting the cancer already went down starting 1985. And not surprisingly, incidence is more common in Caucasians than Asians, who are known to be heavy consumers of green tea.

Tea: a Healthier Choice

Tea is one of the world’s second most popular beverage (after water), but most Americans consider it a poor second to coffee as a caffeine-laced pick-me-up or after-meal beverage. Recently, however, tea has gained new popularity, in part because of its medicinal value. A cup of tea contains only about half as much caffeine as a cup of brewed coffee, and many people prefer its taste and consider its buzz less jarring.

Cancer. Studies suggest that chemicals known as polyphenols in tea help prevent cancer. Researchers compared the diets of 900 people with esophageal cancer with those of 1,500 who did not have the cancer. The people with cancer drank significantly less green tea. The more green tea, the less cancer. In addition, green tea was added to the drinking water of experimental mice and then exposed them to chemicals known to cause a variety of tumors in rodents. The mice who drank the green-tea-laced water developed considerably fewer tumors than the mice who drank plain water. These studies prompted headlines proclaiming “Green Tea Prevents Cancer.” Unfortunately, few Americans drink green tea outside of Asian restaurants; most Americans drink black tea. It has the similar effect too.

Tooth Decay. Tea is a good source of fluoride, which prevents tooth decay. Both green and black teas contain more fluoride than fluoridated water. The tannins in tea also help fight the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Osteoporosis. Tea is a good source of manganese, an essential trace mineral that helps preserve bone.

Colds, Congestion And Asthma. As with coffee, the caffeine in tea eases breathing by opening the bronchial passages. Tea also contains another stimulant, theophylline. Physicians often prescribe pharmaceutical theophylline preparations to treat asthma.

Heart Attack. Men whose diets are rich in polyphenols have an unusually low risk of heart attack. Subsequent diet surveys showed that the heart-healthy Hollanders obtained some of their polyphenols from apples and onions but got a whopping 61 percent from black tea.

Diarrhea. Tea contains astringent tannins. Ancient Chinese physicians valued tea’s mild astringency for treatment of diarrhea. Today’s doctors agree, since mild astringents are widely used to treat diarrhea. Leading home medical guides suggest treating diarrhea with the BRATT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and tea.

Important Facts about Green Tea

By: Danial Hurley
Posted: Oct 24, 2010

Green tea is a type of tea that originated from China. Recently, it has gained popularity in the western and European countries because of its many health benefits. This tea is basically made using the leaves of Camellia sinensis. The ones used for making green tea are those that have undergone minimal oxidation processing.

These days, there are many types of green teas that have been created in various countries which Camellia sinensis can grow. Because of processing, harvesting time and growing conditions, these types of green teas can differ.

Green tea became popular not because they can grow in different continents, but because of the fact that it provides its drinkers with so many benefits. Due to the many claims about the health benefits of green tea, many studies have been conducted to prove these claims.

According to research, green tea has chemical compounds such as salubrious polyphenols. It is especially rich in epigallocatechin gallate, a type of catechin, which is able to regulate viral load that is essential for those people with human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. Although it is not proven to be a cure for HIV nor can it prevent the said virus, this chemical compound can help reduce plaques of AIDS-related dementia and block gp120.

Apart from this, researches have also confirmed that green tea is also rich in Vitamin C, carotenoids and tocopherols. Minerals such as zinc, manganese, chromium and phytochemical compounds are also present in green teas.

As a result, drinking green tea has been proven to reduce the risk of developing health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and kidney stones. It can also reduce dental cavities and improve the density of the bones and their cognitive function.

Young men can also benefit from green tea because it increases fat oxidation during exercises and improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. Other claims about green tea such as prevention of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are yet to be proven. But they have shown promising results in the studies conducted.

Oolong Tea Benefits have been quite well-known for generations of people in the Orient but have only lately been taken cognizance by people in the West. The name “oolong” comes from Chinese for “black dragon”. Oolong Tea, also sometimes spelled as Wu Long Tea, comes from the camellia sinensis plant that is the source of all true teas. However, Oolong tea undergoes some degree of oxidation or fermentation that consequently places it between the green and black tea varieties.

Green Tea Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease

Green tea is one of the most well known and well loved beverages that people around the world drink. People enjoy the soothing flavour of tea that is refreshing by itself and versatile that it can be combined with various ingredients to make a variety of drinks as well as food. Its popularity has made entrepreneurs find ways to market it to the public. Chefs and cooks have made different dishes using green tea as an ingredient. Drug manufacturers have come up with green tea extracts in tablet, capsule and powder forms in order to maximize the potential health benefits of the Camella sinensis or tea plant.

Alzheimer’s disease is a medical condition where a person gradually loses his memories. This is due to oxidative stress that leads to deterioration of brain cells. People with high levels of amyloid beta proteins in the brain have high risk of faster progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Green tea contains antioxidants that protect brain cells from early deterioration. Antioxidants prevent oxidative stress and keep the cells in good condition. Aside from this, it has been shown to inhibit the amyloid beta protein’s activity that is toxic to brain cells.

These have been proven by several researches. The polyphenols and catechins in green tea have been extracted and tested on different types of cells that are cultured and the results reveal that cells treated with green tea extracts experience less oxidative stress compared to those that are not treated with it.

There are also studies conducted that shows people who consume green tea regularly have lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease compared to those who do not. It is also noted that people in oriental countries have lower risks of Alzheimer’s disease and part of it is due to drinking of green tea as part of their regular diet.

Although other factors are also considered like genetics and types of food being eaten, environment and lifestyle, there is no denying that green tea has a major role in the prevention of this debilitating disease. Scientists say that more studies are needed to prove the efficacy of green tea as preventive aid for Alzheimer’s disease. Nevertheless there is no denying that green tea is one of the healthiest beverages a person can enjoy.
