You have made the decision on becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). You may come across the term LVN. A licensed Vocational Nurse is still a Licensed Practical Nurse. Let me explain, the only difference between the two is the state in which you reside. If you happen to reside in Texas or California, practical nurses are referred to as an LVN and in all the other 48 states they are referred to as an LPN.

Duties of an LVN:

As an LVN you will be required to perform specific duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Physician. Some of the duties performed by an LVN may include personal patient care, taking and recording of vital signs, including blood pressure readings and patient temperatures. In some facilities such as nursing homes the LVN has the task of administering of medication and some administrative work. LVN nursing schools prepare their students with the skills required to perform these duties effectively and thoroughly.

Who Employs an LVN?

LVN are employed by a number of medical facilities, you could find LVN nursing jobs in Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Doctors Offices, Home health aide agencies, Rehab Facilities and many more. IF you are a new nurse this field is loaded with opportunities.

Is the LVN profession a growing field?

With the onset of the baby boom generation and with medication being so readily available to prolong lives, it is estimated that the shortage in nursing could last longer than 2010.

Nursing home employment is expected to be higher for an LVN due to the increase in patients needing long term care. Nursing homes are also used to care for patients who were formerly hospitalized but are not yet ready to go home because they may still require care in a health care facility.

What is the salary for an LVN?

Salaries for a Licensed vocational nurse may vary depending on the place of employment. The average LVN in the state of California makes a salary of about $40,012.
