Online LPN Programs: Is it For You?

Whatever the reason, you are faced with a career choice. You may just be finishing high school, or you might be unhappy in your present job or career, considering major changes. Thanks to the common availability of internet access, and the availability of online study programs, including online LPN programs, you can start preparing yourself for a new career from your home.

Should you decide to follow a career as a licensed practical nurse, or LPN, you can complete the theoretical part of the course online, working at your own pace, according to your own schedule and capacity. Contrary to many other career changes, online LPN programs may be completed in as little as twelve months, although it may take longer, depending on your personal circumstances.

The LPN course covers a wide variety of information related to healthcare, including practical patient care, medications, anatomy and physiology. Online study uses mediums such as electronic libraries, video, video conferencing, chat and forums. You have the advantage of being able to return to a video from any particular lesson, and watch the whole session again – an option not open to those in nursing schools and colleges.

The downside of online study is the fact that it relies completely on your self discipline. There are no set class schedules, and expectations from lecturers, or assignment deadlines. If you have a family, and the responsibility of small children, it can be very easy to become distracted, and fall behind on your own planned schedule.

Online LPN programs only offer you the theoretical portion of your training. Your practical training, or clinical training as it is referred to in the trade, still needs to be completed at a suitable facility. The institution offering the course will normally help you to arrange this with a convenient local hospital or nursing school.

Upon completion of both parts of the course, you will be required to take the NCLEX-PN exam. You will have the same qualification, and the same opportunities as other LPN’s, although you chose a different means of study. Although online LPN programs can be demanding because your study is added to your daily responsibilities, it also affords you the ability to study, which you may otherwise not have had access to.
